Several groups of protesters blocked the entrance roads to Albania’s Capital Tirana for about two hours while fighting a government decision to block informal vans that offer intercity transport for passengers.

The protesters, mainly owners of vans known in Albania as “furgon”, chanted: We want bread! There were some scuffles with police forces and some MPs from the Democratic Party in Opposition joined with protesters.

The government says that vans are not entitled by law to offer regular trips and should respect their status as taxis. The protesters think that the government wants to create yet another private monopoly as it has done in the past with urban transport in Tirana.

Vans are the main mean of interurban transport in Albania and are infamous for breaking road rules, often with deadly accidents.
